Oboe Gombergs

What the fuck is up with Oboes and Gombergs?? I mean why is it that not one, but 2 famous oboist Gombergs existed? According to our friends and Wikipedia "the oboe is a double reed musical instrument of the woodwind family...[and]is considered one of the most difficult instruments in the orchestra to play." OK, so maybe playing the oboe shows Gombergs have skill, but I still doubt it brought the babes in.

Ralph Gomberg (god what a name) was apparently some kind of oboe child genius. How does one discover that anyway? Only a Gomberg would be lame enough to stumble upon being a child Oboe virtuoso.

Vampire Gomberg here- I mean Harold Gomberg- was the principal oboist of the New York Philharmonic from 1943 to 1977. I like that he died in Capri, shows the lesser know "party gene" in us Gombergs. Harold, when he wasn't sucking blood or blowing his oboe was also a painter! Very cool considering there is a strong artistic streak among us Gombergs. Don't you love how our family tree connects back on itself?
