Whiney Gomberg

Only a Gomberg could turn drinking into a boring activity. Behold! A pie chart and graph on wine. Is my name sake so lame its idea of a good time is associating alcohol with MATHEMATICS?

But then, after some thorough searching of the Winery Exchange I discovered there are no Gomberg's working there! What drove them to use the Gomberg name for publicity? It can't be because it's pretty. It's as guttural as muck.

So then I got to digging in the muck and this is what I found. "Gomberg, Fredrikson & Associates was founded in 1948 by wine industry pioneer Louis R. Gomberg, and is the oldest professional consulting firm dealing exclusively in wine industry matters. Owned and operated by Jon and Eileen Fredrikson since 1983, the firm publishes management information, and offers a broad range of wine property investment, industry research and consulting services. Clients include most major wine producers, importers and marketers, major financial institutions and other suppliers of goods and services to the wine trade."

So yes- Fredrikson IS PIGGYBACKING on the Gomberg name! My god- my last name has booze appeal! Who knew? Apparently lushes who like pie charts.

A little more about Louis Gomberg. He "was a newsman in 1933. He remembered that his first encounter with California red table wine was in 1924, and said he had no further wine interest until nine years later. He joined the Wine Institute in 1935 from the Associated Press". Interesting. A love of popular culture... like many current Gombergs. Driven to wine out of the shock and horror of media perhaps- also like us current Gombergs. As far as I can tell the old lush is still around- GOOGLE doesn't show any death dates. And get this, he has his own freakin scholarship! Nice to know if any Gombergs out there need bread for learn'in-up on wine:

"Louis R. Gomberg Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1983 to honor one of the wine industry's leaders. Louis Gomberg had been a concert pianist, journalist, and lawyer before becoming involved in the wine trade in 1935. He was involved in economic analysis, marketing, public relations, media, and comparative wine tastings. He served as a wine consultant for the State Department and the White House. The scholarship is restricted to students with an interest in the economic aspects of viticulture and enology."

Extra creepy points to note. Louis plays piano- as said before what is with Gombergs and musical genius?! Economic analysis? That's what my brother does! Also he's a lawyer like my dad, cousin, and sister in law. Gombergs apparently have some kind of musical lawsuit gene. Something to keep in mind!

GOOGLE labels this kindly looking gent as "Louis Gomberg". He sure doesn't look like the wine chugging type!
